What does the Bible say about self-control?

Self-control appears in the KJV as “temperance,” listed in the fruit of the Spirit and in the wisdom of Proverbs.

In Galatians 5:22-23:

²² But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, ²³ Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

In Proverbs 25:28:

²⁸ He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

In 2 Peter 1:5-6:

⁵ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; ⁶ And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
