Mammon is an Aramaic-derived term used in the King James Bible for wealth or riches personified as a rival master to God.
Jesus uses the word in Matthew 6:24: No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
(KJV).
The word also appears in Luke 16:9–13 in the parable of the unjust steward, closing at Luke 16:13: No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
(KJV). Full chapter: Luke 16.
